Does China crack down on K-Pop exports in the main land?

First providing strict rules on what can be shown on Chinese TV and drama series, followed by measures to shut down the proliferation of child celebrities in the Mainland. The media rampage continues as China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television issued an order to restrict the appearance of Korean celebrities on programs and performances on the 28th of July.

Specifically, the government’s ban spans the following points:

  1. K-Pop idol groups are banned from holding events in Mainland China.
  2. K-Pop idol groups are not allowed to hold performances with over 10,000 people in attendance.
  3. Companies to do with Korean cultural matters are restricted from investment.
  4. Any collaborations including any of the abovementioned events are restricted.

The most notable causality of the new guidelines are wildly popular K-Pop boyband EXO‘s fans in Mainland China, as EXO’s concert in Shanghai at the end of August has already been rumoured to be cancelled, with its members Lee Joon Ki and Ji Chang Wook cancelling appearances at their movie’s premiere and appearance on Chinese reality show “Happy Camp” respectively.

But no matter where you look, this change has had significant effects on the Korean entertainment industry, with China as one of its most fervent markets. Some of Korea’s top entertainment agencies have felt the aftershock from the change, with YG Entertainment’s stock falling by 7.96%, CJE&M falling by 6.85%, JYP by 5.4% and SM by 5.32%.

Interestingly, the decision has even been lauded by some web users as “one thing the state administration did right”, as China has since the Hallyu wave been lacking in its own homegrown idols.

Certainly the brute power of law enforcement will almost ensure a picking up of China’s own idol scene, but at the detriment of the Korean industry. However, could this move have unexpected consequences for either side? We’ll just have to sit back and wait to find out.
